How to Prepare Your Greenhouse for Autumn: A Practical Checklist

How to Prepare Your Greenhouse for Autumn: A Practical Checklist

Autumn is not the end of the greenhouse season. It is the right time to inspect the frame, clean the polycarbonate and prepare your greenhouse for colder, wetter and windier days.

With a few simple steps, you can prepare your greenhouse for the next growing season and identify in good time whether you need additional accessories or a replacement part.

1. Remove plant debris

After the summer season, remove stems, leaves, roots and weeds. Pay special attention to plants that showed signs of disease.

A clean greenhouse reduces the risk of pests and diseases being carried into the next season.

2. Clean the polycarbonate panels

Clean the polycarbonate with water, a mild cleaning solution and a soft cloth or sponge. Remove dust, soil and dirt that can reduce the amount of light entering the greenhouse.

Do not use rough brushes, abrasive cleaning products or sharp objects, as they may damage the surface of the panels.

Check the edges and joints as well. If a panel has shifted, cracks have appeared or the fixing has become loose, it is better to deal with the problem early.

3. Check the frame, screws and ground anchors

Inspect the hoops, connecting profiles, doors, windows and all visible screw connections. Carefully tighten any screws that have become loose.

Also check the ground anchors and the stability of the entire structure. The greenhouse should stand on a level and stable base.

Steel strapping can be useful for securing the polycarbonate panels more firmly. It allows the panels to be fixed without drilling holes into them and provides additional stability.

4. Make sure the greenhouse is properly ventilated

Even in autumn, the greenhouse can become quite warm during the day, while the temperature drops quickly at night. These temperature changes can increase condensation.

Check that all ventilation windows open and close correctly. If you are not always at home during the day, you can equip a roof window with an automatic roof window opener.

An automatic opener works without electricity and helps ventilate the greenhouse according to the temperature.

5. Prepare the irrigation system for the next season

If you used an irrigation system in your greenhouse, check the hoses, connectors and drip emitters. Clean the system and prepare it for storage or for use next season.

For smaller gardens, an irrigation system for up to 60 plants or three beds can be a practical solution. The system is simple to use, and the water container is not included.

6. Check whether you need a replacement part

After several seasons, an individual hoop, connector, ground anchor or another part of the frame may become damaged. A small damaged part does not usually mean that the entire greenhouse needs to be replaced.

We also offer replacement hoops for a 3 m wide greenhouse, suitable for repairing or extending an existing structure.

Important: replacement parts are not universally compatible with every greenhouse model. Before ordering, send us a photo of your greenhouse, the main measurements and information about the profile. We can then check whether the selected part is suitable for your structure.

7. Plan your autumn planting

You can continue growing in your greenhouse during autumn. Depending on the weather and your gardening method, you can plant winter lettuce, spinach, rocket, lamb’s lettuce or radishes.

Before sowing, remove the remains of previous plants, loosen the soil and add compost if necessary.
